The tribe Aleocharini includes three subtribes, namely, Aleocharina Fleming, 1821, Compactopediina Kistner, 1970, Hodoxenina Kistner, 1970. The latter two subtribes are known as termitophilous insects and having unique body. In Japan, there is only one subtribe, Aleocharina, is known at present. Therefore, keys and identification guides are restricted to the subtribe. In totall, 5 gerena, 6 subgenera (all belong to the genus Aleochara), 27 species are known from Japan.

Monophyly of Aleocharina has not still established, though it is considered plesimorphic compared to the other subtribes (Ashe & Maus, 1998).

Diagnosis. The subtribe is distinguished by following characteristics: (1) 5-5-5 tarsal formula (4-5-5 in Tinotus Sharp, 1833) (Hanley, 2002ｂ; Klimaszewski et al., 2002); (2) antennae 11 segmented; (3) maxillary palpus 4-segmented, plus apical pseudosegment (total 5 segments); (4) labial palpus 3-segmented, plus apical pseudosegment (total 4 segments); (5) ligula bilobed (klimaszewski et al., 2003); (6) at least some species have reticulated velum on the parameres of male aedeagus (Seevers, 1978;  Ashe & Maus, 1998).

本亜族は明確に定義されているわけではないが，他の特徴的な2亜族からは，腹部第9節の形状などで容易に識別できる(Kistner, 1970a; 1970b)．日本からは以下の5属6亜属30種が知られる(亜属は全てAleocharaに属する)．

なお，生態が知られている大部分の種(Aleochara, Tinotus)に関しては，双翅目短角亜目環縫群の蛹(囲蛹)に捕食寄生することが知られている(Seevers, 1978; Klimaszewski & Jansen, 1993)．

生息環境例．鹿の死体から多数のナカアカヒゲブトハネカクシA. curtulaに混じって本種が得られた．

本種が生息していた環境例（採集場所の写真がないので周辺の環境を紹介）．登山客の食べ残しと思われるエビに来集していた．

本種が得られた海岸の様子．漂着したアシや海藻などの下に潜んでいた．

ホソセスジヒゲブトハネカクシAleochara trisulcataは漂着していた海藻などの塊の下に潜んでいた．

上の個体は日当たりの良い林道で得られた．林道の片側は写真のような照葉樹林に面していたが，もう片方は人工的な環境であった．

Yamamoto(2009)で公表した本種の国内分布地図を以下に示す．写真の個体は対馬初記録として発表した．
